Kwakwaka’wakw artist Alfred Robertson here depicts Bakwas, the “King of the Ghosts,” a pivotal figure in the ceremonial repertoire of his people.
The Kwakwaka’wakw, whose territories span northern Vancouver Island and adjacent mainland inlets, are famed for highly developed potlatch traditions and complex masked performances. Bakwas is often shown with a gaunt, greenish face and wild hair, inhabiting the liminal edges of the forest. Robertson’s interpretation captures Bakwas’s eerie yet compelling presence, symbolizing encounters with the supernatural and the dangers—and gifts—of the spirit world.
