Kwakiulth First Nation artist Andy Bruce, a descendant of renowned ethnographer and cultural mediator George Hunt, carves this powerful Tsonoqua (Dzunuk’wa/Wild Woman) mask.
The Kwakiulth are part of the larger Kwakwaka’wakw peoples of the northern Vancouver Island and mainland inlets, known for elaborate potlatch ceremonies and complex mask traditions. Bruce’s work carries forward that lineage: the dark face, wide-open mouth, and burning eyes reflect the Wild Woman’s dual nature as a fearsome forest dweller and a bringer of supernatural wealth, central to many winter ceremonials.
