Kwagiulth First Nation artist Veronica Hackett offers her interpretation of the Wild Woman, a powerful forest spirit figure closely related to Dzunuk’wa/Tsonoqua in Kwakwaka’wakw traditions.
The Kwagiulth, part of the larger Kwakwaka’wakw cultural group, are renowned for dramatic masks used in winter ceremonies. Hackett’s mask, with its dark face, open mouth, and striking painted details, portrays a being both terrifying and generous—one who can abduct the careless but also bestow spiritual gifts and wealth on those who respect her power.
